The Future of SMS - Bathrooms?

SMS has been used for some cool and interesting applications, but this one has to take the cake. In Finland, some of their new public bathrooms, the only way to open the door is by messaging ‘open’ to a number listed on the door. This is a new initiative the government is taking following vandalism, theft, and arson attempts. The hope is, that by having the users phone numbers on file, that it will deter vandalism.

All I can imagine is standing there desperately needing to use the bathroom doing the pee pee dance while my cell signal is cutting out or better yet, having a dead battery. And what about the people who just plain don’t have a cell phone?
