Today, we launched an exciting new video contest on memelabs with Movember, the world’s largest charity event raising funds for men’s health. The Moscars will challenge men and women to showcase their involvement in the movement on the red carpet, so to speak.

What’s Movember, you ask? Movember is a worldwide movement which rallies gentlemen to grow moustaches during November to raise awareness and funds for cancers affecting men. Each Movember, men (“Mo Bros”) are challenged to start the month clean-shaven and grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the hairy ribbon for men’s health and the guys growing them become a walking billboard for 30 days – both on the street and online, through The Moscars contest. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache, sparking hundreds of conversations about the seemingly taboo topics of men’s health and prostate cancer. Funds raised in the US will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, and Prostate Cancer Canada in Canada. Women (or “Mo Sistas”) are also invited to participate by helping to rally and support their male friends!

Anyone across the globe can create and submit up to three 3-minute Movember-inspired videos for the chance to win awesome prizes and help drive awareness for the cause. The Movember video contest closes December 10, 2010, so hurry up and get your videos in! Voting for the winning entries is open to the general public, and winners will be publicly announced December 15th, 2010. For more information about the contest, its rules, and the prizes, visit www.memelabs.com/moscars.

Every 26 seconds, a student drops out of high school. Each year, over 1.2 million students do not graduate from high school on time. 70% of all eighth graders do not read on grade level.

These aren’t estimates. They are hard facts; the sad reality of the current education system in the U.S. But with difficult times also comes great hope and acts of charity.

Invoke is working with the Get Schooled Foundation to power the technology for its Get Schooled Challenge and multi-city tour, which will host Youth Summits and events in cities across the country: New York, Philadelphia, Memphis, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver.

With this challenge and tour, the Get Schooled Foundation’s goal is to engage students and their families to help improve high school graduation rates, and college readiness and completion. The challenge asks participants to make a commitment to do better in school, re-enroll in high school, or finally go to college, be a more-involved parent, or even just volunteer a few hours a month in a local school.

Using the website and challenge platform built by Invoke, anyone can get involved to pledge or volunteer. Not only does the site hold a wealth of information and ideas for improving education, but the customized city pages for each tour city help communities know when and where the Get Schooled National Challenge and Tour Bus will arrive in their city!

Sponsored by Viacom, the tour will feature the country’s top entertainers, athletes, and personalities with a commitment to educations, including Ludacris, Common, Big Boi, Pharrell, Jay Sean, Keri Hilson, Ciara, Dorrough, DJ Diamond Kuts, Joakim Noah, Marshall Faulk, Tom Papa, MTV News Correspondents Sway Calloway and SuChin Pak, and more.

Today, Dario, Grace and I attended the kick-off event here in NYC, where hundreds of high school students, along with musicians Ludacris, Pharrell, and Keri Hilson, and MTV news correspondent Sway Calloway, gathered to raise awareness an participate in Get Schooled:

Marie Groark, Executive Director of the Get Schooled Foundation said, “Too often our education crisis seems like a mammoth problem that we cannot overcome. The Get Schooled National Challenge and Tour reminds us that by making a commitment to do better in school, be a more involved parent, or even volunteer a few hours a month at a school, that we all can be a part of the solution.”

Don’t hesitate to help the futures of America’s youth, and step up here: http://www.getschooled.com/stepup

Posted by Ryan Holmes

* This blog post is part of Invoke’s participation in the 2008 Vancouver Blogathon for Charity

For the last few years the recording industry and RIAA have been fighting an uphill battle trying to keep their traditional model alive in an evolving market. The dinosaur analogy has been used over and over again as the industry tries to keep their share (and more) of the market through digital distribution. Disruptive delivery services like itunes, muxtape, lastfm, pandora, and the countless torrent sites have fully blown apart this market leaving “traditionals” scrambling to find acquisitions and partners in order to keep some market share.

The video industry has had a reprive from the erosion of market share due to bandwidth and technical limitations inherent with video-web distribution, but these barriers are quickly fading. Video portals like Youtube, Revver, iFilm, and Vimeo have come on with a fury, but for the most part contain user generated media (UGM) and as with music, video has also showed up on the usual torrent sites for illegal download. There have been quite a few models to helping monetize content, such as advertising, overlays, subscription, paid delivery. The internet allows producers and other content owners to get directly in touch with consumers via video portals so, ultimately these portals become the new broadcasters. Where does this leave traditional broadcasters?

The demographic shift of television viewership to internet viewership is well under way.
“According to a study released by Magna Global’s Steve Sternberg, the five broadcast nets’ average life median age (in other words, not including delayed DVR viewing) was 50 last season. That’s the oldest ever since Sternberg started analyzing median age more than a decade ago — and the first time the nets’ median age was outside of the vaunted 18-49 demo.” via http://www.variety.com/VR1117988273.html. Without control of the delivery mechanism, and a declining viewership, traditional broadcasters stand to loose.

Broadcasters contact us, we want to help!
