Podcasting is a new medium that’s sweeping the web — everyone, from musicians to comedians to entrepreneurs to big businesses, can use this powerful tool to reach a varied audience easily, quickly and accessibly.
First, we must define what a podcast is. The term “podcast” is where “broadcast” meets “iPod” — and just as its moniker suggests, the podcast is an audio broadcast downloadable onto your iPod or into your free copy of iTunes from Apple. (Don’t worry - you can download and listen to Podcasts on any audio software or mp3 player on the market these days, not just iProducts.)
Podcasts are generally mp3 files, just like most of the downloadable music available on the ‘net in this day and age — but there’s something special about them.
Podcasts go hand-in-hand with RSS (Really Simple Syndication). RSS is a technology that, like Podcasts, is making its devious little way into every facet of the internet. You see, Podcasts are subscribable. You don’t search out the music online, like you do with mp3 music files. You subscribe to the Podcast via RSS, and it comes to you. Customers, visitors and clients can sign up for your Podcast, and then every time you release one, the Podcast is automatically downloaded into their iTunes. If you’re not using iTunes to distribute your Podcast, you can have your listeners subscribe to your RSS feed/blog, and they’ll be given a link through their RSS reader every time you release a new Podcast.
Another great feature of the Podcast is that, unlike a live radio or Television show, the Podcast can be listened to whenever the listener wishes; they can download it upon release and then listen to it in the car, on the bus, or while waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
Podcasts can be live talk radio shows, comedy performances, musical showcases, or anything else you can imagine to do with audio. The medium is still fairly uncharted; businesses are only beginning to experiment with advertising and branding. Do something new — and let us help. Define it for yourself and make it your own.
Podcasting is exploding. It’s the new idea in entertainment and information; accessible, simple and tailored to the exact needs of the podcaster (you). And the best part? It’s far more affordable than traditional media. Reach everyone you need to and spend less doing it — what more could “the wave of the future” be about?
