CES 2012 – Day 2 recap from the technology tradeshow

At CES early in January, I attended the Mashable MASHBASH CES Afterparty located at the Mirage. It was part of my first full day at CES and I felt like I made some serious headway. I spent the majority of the day talking with various vendors about their new products in the Central Hall. This hall held all of the major companies at the show. The booths were gigantic and beyond overkill (see some of the photos below). A few people mentioned the Samsung spent 3million dollars, and I don’t doubt it for a second.

Wifi enabled devices were a huge theme, and every TV manufacturer had two version of connected TVs: one with a Google TV integration, and the other solution running a proprietary operating system. It makes total sense to cover both platforms, but I have the feeling TV manufacturers are going to have a difficult time building and sustaining an active TV developer ecosystem that’s native to their device. After a full day, I only covered about 55 per cent of the show — it was that huge.

Invoke’s Kenny Grant (product leader for memelabs and SVC) attended CES Jan. 10 to 13. He came back with plenty of photos and great information about consumer technology.

First day of CES 2012 is in the books. I touched down in sunny Las Vegas at 1 p.m. Jan. 10 and quickly hit the registration tent to pick up my badge and welcome pack. The show was gigantic, far bigger than I ever imagined — 50k booths and 150k+ attendees. I managed to visit the entire south hall and demonstrated new products including the Samsung Galaxy Note, Social TV devices, various Tablets, Nokia phones, and Microsoft Xbox. Following the show, I stopped by the Spike TV after party at Wynn.

Vote for your favourite food truck with the Eat St. video contest

Over the last few months, food truck operators across North America have been busy submitting their videos to the Eat St. contest, telling their stories and hoping to get their cart featured on an episode of the show. An influx of submissions resulted in 67 trucks from all over the US and Canada vying for the votes of their communities and Eat St. fans at large.

Voting opened Jan. 5 and goes to Jan. 31, 2012. Register an account at http://memelabs.com/eat-st/ then vote daily for your favourite video. So far, Hamilton, Ontario’s Gorilla Cheese is leading the charge with 1,164 votes and counting. Which video gets your vote?

Memelabs wins Digi Award for most innovative digital media technology

You may remember a short while ago we mentioned that one of our products, memelabs, was nominated for a nextMEDIA 2011 Digi Award (formerly known as the Canadian New Media Awards). The awards were handed out at a gala in Toronto Dec. 6.

So here’s some great news: memelabs has won the award for Most Innovative Digital Media Technology!

We’d also like to congratulate our good friends at Hootsuite on being named one of Canada’s top digital media companies.

Thanks to everyone for their support and congratulatory notes, and of course, thank you to the Digi Awards for this honour. We’re very pleased indeed.

Memelabs and Eat Street up for Digi Awards

In the good news department, Invoke has been nominated for a couple of Digi Awards! The memelabs platform and the Eat Street App are both nominated for the nextMEDIA 2012 Digi Awards.

Previously known as the Canadian New Media Awards, the Digi Awards are Canada’s premiere showcase of the remarkable digital media companies, projects, products and pioneers that are putting Canada at the forefront of the international mediascape.

Along with our pals at HootSuite and Yellow Pages, we’re thrilled to have two products among the top digital apps in Canada. We have been nominated in two categories.
