Celebrating the best apps of the past year, MediaPost’s Appy Awards are March 19 in San Francisco. Invoke is nominated for an award in the Wildcard category for the Onion Magic Answer Ball app created in collaboration with the Onion. See a complete list of finalists here.
A childhood throwback with the Onion’s satirical spin on predicting the future, the app allows the user to choose from a list of existing questions as well as asking whatever pops into their head. Shake the iPhone or iPad as you would an old school Magic 8 Ball – the Shake Meter will let the user know if they’re shaking properly – and wait for the answer. Expect snarky, funny and brutally honest answers and the occasional “Sorry, I wasn’t listening.” In addition, users can choose to post their questions and answers to Facebook.
The second annual “Get Appy” Awards Party praises the creativity of the best in the business across 39 categories. Categories include Business, Cooking, Family/Parenting, Healthcare & Fitness, News, and Music, to name a few. MediaPost’s coverage of the relatively new field of app development is commendable; there are thousands of eligible apps, with new apps appearing daily. The Appy Awards consider applications regardless of format, platform or device, including mobile, social and web-based apps, said MediaPost. Notable winners from the inaugural Appy Awards include the Photobucket Android app in the Photography category, the Urbanspoon app in the Travel category, the O, The Oprah Magazine February 2011 app in the Lifestyle category, and The Knot Weddings Magazine app in the iPad Publishing category. When asked about Invoke’s chances of taking home the Appy, the Onion Magic Answer Ball replied: “You Betcha!”
Congrats to the Invoke team and the Onion and good luck at the Appy Awards!
