2nd Annual Invoke Bike to Work Week
Posted by Jenn Lowther
With the sun out, beach volleyball in full swing, and a bit of a sunburn on my shoulder…the only thing that it can mean is that summer is coming!! That means getting outside and having fun. With the advent of this beautiful weather, we also get our 2nd Annual Bike to Work Week. So dust of your bikes, get in shape, and help save the environment.
To give the office a little catalyst to get involved, Dario has upped the anti a little bit. Anyone who bikes to week each day during the bike week, will be entered into a draw to win a shiny present straight from Mexico. I don’t know what it is yet, but he’s assured me that it’s nicer than the cow foot cup from Columbia that Paul brought back and now lives on Nadia’s desk. Now that’s hot!!!
In 2007, Bike to Work Week had 3550 Registered participants, 550 Registered workplaces, and 29 tonnes of CO2 not emitted. We can do better than this Vancouver. Invoke challenges all of the other tech companies in Vancouver to get involved and see which company can have the largest carbon offset per employee. Think you can beat us? Register your company and put your bike where your mouth is.

Hi. Please join the Bicycle to Work! LinkedIn networking group. Members pledge that they will try to ride their bicycle to work or on an errand at least once a week. Although the benefits should be obvious, let me outline them here.
Right now people in the industrialized world are facing two very grave problems: obesity and a growing scarcity of oil. Compounding this problem is the new food shortage brought about, in part, by the conversion of food cropland to bio-fuel crop production. Most people feel powerless to help, but there is one thing that we can do. Ride our bicycles to work.
If everyone would agree to ride their bikes to work one day per week we could cut oil consumption by as much as 10-15%. No one would argue that riding a bike burns more calories than driving the car. Although popular politically right now, most bio-fuels consume more energy than they produce. We would be much better to eat those bio-crops then use our own energy to transport us around.
So spread the word. Make it a movement! Bicycle to work one day a week and do your part to cut back obesity and the overuse of oil and precious cropland.
